Reiki and Religion

I'm asked this question pretty often so I hope that this blog post answers some questions that might be out there regarding religion and Reiki.

To participate in a Reiki session you do not need to believe in any particular dogma or perform any kind of ritual. Reiki is a Japanese word that roughly translates to “God’s wisdom or the Higher Power” and “life force energy” or “spiritually guided life force energy.”

Reiki is not a religion but it is spiritual. Religion provides many with guidance and support on how to develop and maintain a connection with the divine through worship, texts, and activities. Spirituality is the belief that you have a connection with the divine. Whether you identify the divine as God, Allah, Buddha, or Spirit you are seeking to improve your connection with the divine within yourself and around you.

It is possible to be part of a religion and have no spiritual connection while it is also possible to have a spiritual connection but not belong to an organized religion.

Reiki provides an opportunity to heal and does not seek to distract anyone from their religious beliefs or their connection with the divine. It is perfectly fine to reach for a headache medicine when you need to, just as it is also perfectly fine to seek a Reiki treatment if you feel you are run down or not feeling well. In essence, Reiki is a way for you to open your body up to healing itself.
